Welcome

As I watched the last legislative session in Olympia, I found myself getting discouraged and afraid for our future. Our state faces one of its toughest challenges in its history - preparing a sustainable, balanced budget. The legislature, however chose to ignore the challenge of restructuring the state budget in favor of placing extra tax burdens on our citizens and businesses and once again delayed dealing with the painful reality of an unsustainable government. Until the spending in Olympia is under control, Olympia cannot deal with any of the other issues affecting our state, like putting our people back to work, providing quality education for our children, or maintaining our public safety infrastructure.

This is why I am running for State Representative. When I became Mayor of Milton six years ago, the City was nearly bankrupt. I had to make very tough decisions including cutting all unnecessary programs and laying off 25% of my staff. These cuts were difficult and painful, but from these tough choices emeged a healthy City. I will take the same determined “can do” attitude to Olympia and constantly push to decrease spending in a responsible manner to ensure a healthy future for our district and our state. We owe this to our children and grandchildren.  We cannot stand by let our government mortgage their future.

Issues

Instead of rising to the challenge, our legislature chose to overturn 1-960 and once again place the extra tax burden on the backs of our citizens and businesses. Year after year our legislature chooses to ignore the painful reality that Washington State does not have a sustainable state budget which in turn cripples our state economy. Until the spending in Olympia is under control, we cannot effectively deal with any of the other important issues affecting our state including putting our people back to work, providing a quality education for our children, fixing our transportation woes and maintaining public safety in our communities.
